The Big Kahuna

April 27th, 2008 by Alaina Dorsey · 1747 Comments

So. It’s been a long ass time since I posted anything about gaming (I’ve been kinda lazy and doing absolutely nothing productive for a week and a half–a pity, I know). Thus, to get you up-to-date, I have been playing some games just not as many as I’d like but here’s what’s been shaking as of late:

-Tomb Raider: Legend (Xbox360): I sent Tomb Raider back because I don’t feel like thinking and Lara Croft’s bust and khaki booty shorts mean nothing to me (too bad I didn’t indulge in making her jump off cliffs like everyone else does–they tell me after the fact!). I think I need to get over this stigma of mine to avoid games with puzzles because I need some logic skills…Who doesn’t need logic skills? Maybe I’ll pick this game up again over the summer.

- Beautiful Katamari (Xbox360): The game would have been a lot more fun if it weren’t for the King of the Cosmos’s annoying scratchy voice and my complete noobism at the game. I guess the developers were expecting you to have already had experience from the previous games (two or three?) and so I didn’t get much time to learn. I was incredibly slow at rolling up the wonders of the messy world (when you’re playing the game, all you can think is, “Why the hell is all this crap on the floor/ground EVERYWHERE?) and when I managed to finally get the designated goal of the “mission,” my katamari was always mediocre! Ugh! Mediocre isn’t good enough! Even if it’s in a game where I’m rolling up a bunch of crap in a colorful world in order to make planets and stars.

-Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword (Nintendo DS): So I went home the week before last and decided that it was time to shake the dust off of my DS Lite (dust just doesn’t look good on a black DS, ya know?) and buy a new game. I heard/read reviews about the Ninja Gaiden game and thus I decided to pick it up and give it a whirl. I bought the game used and it was quite sad to see that the person who traded the game in only played the game for 5 minutes and decided to trade it in. Isn’t that sad? I mean, come on, the game relies, for the most part, on the touch screen and that’s basically the core of the DS, right? A shame.

But anyway, I started playing through it and it’s quite fun actually. Instead of holding the DS by the way that it folds up, you hold it like it’s a book and you just scribble away with the stylus to make Hayabusa run, throw shuriken, jump, and do all sorts of attacks. The learning curve is pretty simple (how can you go wrong with touch screen?) and I’ve had fun with it since I bought it. I have taken a break from the game for whatever reason, but I think I should start playing it again. Other than Elite Beat Agents, this might just be the second DS game I’ll beat (how sad, I didn’t even beat Phoenix Wright /emo/ Why the hell did I trade it in? I was so close to finishing…). The game has its puzzles (gag), but that’s what GameFaqs is for, right? Right!

-Saints Row (Xbox360): I never touched a GTA game in my life and since this game is a knock off, I’m getting a feel for what GTA truly is–FUCKING HUGE! Oh my goodness, there are so many missions to do and completing one mission gets me 1% closer to completion of the game. That’s ridiculous. I’m 21% into the game and I figure that as long as it takes to play through this, I should be done with the story by time the second Saints Row comes out in August.

Speaking of GTA, the fourth game comes out this Tuesday and it’s predicted that it’ll out-sell Halo 3 on its midnight release. I haven’t kept up with GTAIV promos or anything (let alone any future release), so maybe I should do a bit of research into that. I’ll end up playing the game over the summer when I work at GameStop so that I can get it at a discount and check it out for free, ha ha. Best method ever.

-Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis): So my good friend Bob came over my house when I was at home and after about 10 minutes of looking up nonsense on YouTube, I was overcome with the desire to play the Sonic games. Seemingly to Bob’s dismay, I whipped out my Sega Genesis and all my Sonic games (oh yes, I do have those), and I commenced getting my fun on like the game was a new release or something. Sonic is fucking awesome. You can buy the first Sonic and Sonic 2 off of the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace, but should I really do that since I already have the games? I just wanted to buy them since I decided against bringing the Genesis on campus. Next week is when I start studying for finals–There’s no room for me and Sonic’s love! =(

-Soul Calibur III (Playstation 2): I only had one controller for my Sega Genesis and I wanted to play something with Bob, so why not the fighting game that I manage to beat everyone’s (every guy’s except for one) ass in? It has to be my favorite fighting game because the controls are so simple–I can improvise and make combos instead of knowing combos from the command list (I have never memorized a combo in my life, btw). My favorite thing to do is use my custom made characters when I play against human players so that I can not only show them my ever-so beautiful creations (especially my bald, female monk Kyobe), but also fool them into thinking that I’m not so great at the game. Yes, yes, I suppose that may be unfair, but it’s not as though people I play against are inexperienced. I’m okay with my custom characters, but my main fix is Sophitia. It was love at first swipe (she uses a sword). I basically whooped Bob with Sophitia and it was great. Ha ha ha… It was great. Maybe I’ll practice using Cassandra over the summer and learn some of Sophitia’s specials.

Oh, and let me note that was the first time I touched my PS2 since mid-December. It’s collecting so much dust… The poor dear.

-Guitar Hero II/III (Xbox360): Some times duty calls and I have to pick up this game again. I’m still pretty mediocre with Hard mode and it’d be awesome if I got five stars on “Through the Fire and Flames” on Medium (I got four stars somehow and it never seemed to happen again…). I want to be able to rock “Through the Fire and Flames” to some degree on Expert mode for Otakon just to be a bad ass. I dunno. I’ll pick up the controller again some time this week… Maybe even tonight.

And speaking of guitars, I think I might pick up my acoustic this summer and learn how to play better. I promised myself that I wouldn’t get an electric guitar until I “mastered” the acoustic to some degree.

-Virtua Fighter 5 (Xbox360): And the big finale to this extremely long post! GameFly sent this game to me (out of four games, it was #3 and they sent it… Call of Duty 4 has high availability and it’s #2, so wtf?). There aren’t many fighters for the 360 (there’s this and Dead or Alive 4…as well as Rumble Roses). However, I think this may be the best one, as I am having some fun with it and getting a grasp for the characters, especially the dark-skinned, camo-clad female Vanessa Lewis (if you played the 4th Virtua, she looked so fucking manly that I can’t figure out for the life of me WHY a developer would do that). I’m just working my way through the game for achievement points and to gain some skills. Vanessa is currently my main fix, but I don’t think she’ll be my main battle character–I’m not too good with her, but I don’t think she’s really that fast. I’ll keep you posted since I just got the game in the mail yesterday.

Alas, this was the called the Big Kahuna because of how goddamn long it is! Geebus. I’ll avoid being lazy for the rest of the semester…just as long as GameFly doesn’t fail me.

Now it’s time for me to do Japanese homework and sigh because the guy next door is “singing” (he screams most of the time) and playing his guitar. Man, this room needs to be cleaned… it’s been a mess for two weeks.

Then again… one round of Virtua Fighter 5 before homework won’t hurt.

Must-See TV Returns Thursday

April 23rd, 2008 by Nadia Saah · 3689 Comments

Greetings.

Just wanted to remind everyone that ABC’s Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost all return with new episodes tomorrow night, starting at 8 pm ET.

Some might call me a Grey’s Anatomy fanatic. That’s fine, I’m OK with that.

That said, I dug around the Internet in search of some Grey’s scoop!

Apparently, ceator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes told TV Guide that Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) WILL be getting back together within the next five episodes (that’s all they could fit in this season due to the writer’s strike).

If you want to read more spoilers, check this out: http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TV-Show-Blog/Tv-Previews/Greys-Anatomy-Preview/800037685

Oh and Lost is back after a five-week hiatus. Remember, there’s only one season left!

I never got into Ugly Betty, but I hear the show is fantastic.

Anyone having any good TV parties?

Mariah Carey and Phil Collins

April 18th, 2008 by Maureen Nicholl · 1777 Comments

I’m not the biggest fan of Mariah Carey, but I have to give her props for her new music video.  Made for her single “Touch My Body,” it features Jack McBrayer, best known for his hilarious role as the nerdy paige on the sit com 30 Rock.  He plays a similar character in Carey’s music video.  Check it out at… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZ2HB2b_xpQ&feature=related

Speaking of music videos, I think Phil Collins takes the cake for most disturbing video ever made.  As if his song “In the Air Tonight” wasn’t creepy enough to begin with, the music video features his face way too close for comfort.  View it at your own risk… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz7gajAb2ww

A beautiful day in College Park

April 17th, 2008 by Jessica Bauer · 1769 Comments

It’s that time of year again. Students have begun to flock on McKeldin Mall in between classes to enjoy the beautiful weather, and today was no exception. Today was gorgeous and tomorrow will be gorgeous — 79 and sunny! Basically, I am beyond excited that spring is finally here.

Here are some pictures I took today of our beautiful campus on a beautiful day.

NASA just got served

April 16th, 2008 by Dan Masopust · 583 Comments

Thirteen-year-old German kids are apparently really smart. I’m talking like NASA smart. Well, I guess that’s not an appropriate comparison, seeing how a 13-year-old German kid corrected NASA’s estimate of the chances that an asteroid will strike Earth in 2029. NASA, probably shamefully, re-checked their work and agreed with the kid, Nico Marquardt.

NASA originally estimated the odds to be 1 in 45,000 that the asteroid would hit. Marquardt figured out that the odds were actually 1 in 450 and then called NASA to tell them they just got served.

No big deal NASA, if the asteroid did hit Earth it would only land in the Atlantic Ocean creating monstrous tsunamis that would wipe out coastlines and parts of the inland. After that walk in the park, a large cloud of gas kicked up by the 200-billion-ton ball of iron and iridium would blanket the sky, resulting in an ice age that would leave most of the remaining population frozen solid.

No big deal NASA.

I think NASA is a fascinating organization and vital to the advancement of mankind, but Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck aren’t going to land on this bitch. Even though they are just odds and have no bearing on whether the asteroid will hit, it is still important for NASA to be on top of their work and not slip up.

Marquardt also entered his findings in a regional science competition. I wonder if he’ll win?

Ashlee Simpson Preggers?

April 16th, 2008 by Nadia Saah · 1235 Comments

Truth be told, I absolutely loathe the word “preggers” but anyway…

Half the media is reporting singer Ashlee Simpson is pregnant with rocker/boyfriend Pete Wentz’s baby and the other half of the media is saying it’s just a rumor.

Decide for yourself!

Support your local record store

April 12th, 2008 by Maureen Nicholl · 1801 Comments

A week from today, Saturday, April 19th, artists, fans, and labels will pay homage to the independently owned music store on Record Store Day.  Many national recording artists, including Metallica, The Donnas, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, will participate by doing in-store signings or performances at various record shops across the country.  Metallica’s meet and greet, which will occur at a record store in California, will be their first in-store appearance in almost ten years.  Participating stores in our area include CD Warehouse, Melody Record Shop Inc., Olsson’s Books and Records, and Crooked Beat Records in Washington, DC, and El Suprimo Records in Baltimore, MD, among others.  Most stores can’t boast performances by bands as big as Metallica, but they will feature demonstrations, sales, and other surprises for customers.  Visit the website at www.recordstoreday.com for more information and to view quotes by famous artists about why they still love going to their local record store in the age of iTunes and internet downloading.
