For those of us who crave the French cafes of our hometowns (ah, those precious memories of espresso coffees, pastries, and smoking cigarettes on the patio in high school…), but know that no where in College Park (especially the place on the corner with the big ESPRESSO written on it) even comes close.
I always felt that the fact that I couldn’t get that atmosphere anywhere in PG County was somehow indicative of PG County’s overall feeling of sadness and depravity. “It’s because of all of the poor people” I would say to myself. Or “if only the City would clean up Rt. 1, and make the professors want to live here, then there would be more of a demand!”.
Whatever the reason, there’s little in the way of good french baked goods around here- with one exception.Bonaparte Breads is a tiny bread/pastry/coffee shop in Savage Mills — about 15 minutes up Rt. 1 by car. Visiting Savage Mills is fun, too, because they have lots of little boutiques (and it’s all indoors, so go when it rains), antique shops, and Rams Head.
You can sit on the sweet little brick patio and drink your coffee with the sun shining on your face. It’s great.
Opens at 10:00 am on most days.
CORRECTION: Bonaparte Breads is in Howard County. Go figure. Guess PG STILL needs a French place, after all.
